427 acres, rock hunting, hiking and fishing.
Gem Location
In the county of Providence the gem hunter can go to three different
locations to look for gems. They are; Diamond Hill, here you will find
agate and quartz; at Cumberland Hill the gems to find are amethyst,
sagentite and smoky quartz. And at Conklin Line Quarries the gems to
look for are apple-green bowenite, calcite and dolomite.
Cumberland, RI: One of my favorite places is Diamond Hill State Park in Cumberland RI. The Hill is basically a huge chunk of quartz about 1 mile long and 100 yards wide. The quartz is FULL of cavities that have anything from crusts to inch long perfect quartz crystals. I have even found a large flake of amethyst, but no crystals as yet.
Large Quartz Crystal Crusts
Directions: On way up old ski slope, take path to right. Rocks dumped down side of hill to build ski lifts contain Quartz crystals.
Crystal sizes vary from 2-3 mm to 2-3 cm. Crust sizes vary from 25 to 500 sq. cm. Crusts are both loose and attached to matrix. Some have unidentified pink/purple coatings and inclusions.
